このライナーを書くので調子いいことを言うわけじゃなくって、本 当に最近ボブ・マーリーを聞くことが多い。

何を聞いても多かれ少なかれ仕事と関わってくるとなれば、どんな 音が本当に自分をリラックスさせ、プライベートな気分にさせてくれ るかというのは、けっこう難しく、個人的には大変な問題だったりす

るのだ。

改めてのきっかけはやはりあの4枚組のベスト盤だったかもしれな い。そしてアルバム「トーキン・ブルース」の元ネタとなった73年ア メリカでのブートレグや、リタ・マーリーの手によってリリースされ たラスト・ライヴ 「Pittsburg 9.23.80」 などが現在の愛聴盤である。 そ これは天国の住人となったマーリーが、いまでもぼくの心の中で生き続 け、勇気づけてくれることの何よりの証明でもあったりする。 まった くぼくの中の彼は死んではいないのだ。

肉体を知覚することは出来なくなってしまったが、彼の精神にはい までも会える。 彼が求めた愛と救済の心に満ちた世界を誰もまだ実現 できてはいないけれど、でもその種はいまもいたるところでまき続け られているし、ぼくたちは前に進んでいると信じている。 その確信と 力を、いまも彼の歌によって与えられる。 そんなアーティストが、ぼ くにとってのマーリーだ。

いまでも思いをとばすと、あの日本公演の空間にもどることができ る。 決してかつてのようなしなやかさは歌からは感じられなかったが、 しかし、そんなことはあの魂の祈りにも似た歌の前では、何ほどの問 題も無かった。 ただ一つ、終始、彼の瞳が殆ど開けられることが無か ったことが、ず~っと、いまも気に掛かっている。 ぼくらは、本当に 彼の祈りに応えられているのだろうか?

嬉しいヴィデオ作品の再発だ。じつは85年に本作は東映ビデオから 発売され、そのときもぼくがライナーを執筆しているのだけど、日付 を見ると85年5月6日となっている。 ほぼ8年前。 その原稿はボブ・ マーリーが病気で逝ってから、 今年ですでに4年の月日が経つ” と書 き出されている。

それから原稿は、当時 「彼の死を商売にはしない」 と言いながら、 まるでファンの足元を見るように貴重な作品や映像を小出しにするこ としかしないアイランド レコードへの怒りに続いていくのだけど、 本当にいまでこそ前記の4枚組や各種のヒストリー・ヴィデオなど、 かなり充実したアイテムも登場しているからまだいいが、あの頃はロ クなものも出ず、またいろいろ隠し持っていることは明らかなくせに、 ちっともそれをまとめようともしない、いーかげんな姿勢に本気で腹 を立てていた。

ちょうどそうした時期にこの映像の発売となったので、よけい本来 だったら誰よりも精力的に行なわなければならないはずのアイランド のことが頭にきたのだろう。

実際このオリジナル・タイトルが“ハートランド・レゲエ”と名付 けられカナダの制作チームが撮った映像作品は、マーリーたちの精神 的なバックボーンであったラスタファリアニズムについても簡単では あるものの、きちんと紹介しようとするなど、単にカリブ海の新しい 音楽を興味本位だけで聞かせたり、 または珍しいライヴを見せるとい う以上に突っ込んだ内容となっているところが嬉しいし、 高く評価す べき内容だ。

キリスト教のイディオムに多かれ少なかれ精神的に枠組みを付けら れている欧米の人間にとって、それは理解しがたいところの多い宗教 ではあるだろうが、 しかし長年の植民地支配 (しかも先祖は奴隷とし てアフリカから強制的に連れてこられたわけだ)によって叩きのめさ れてきたジャマイカの人々にとって、それは大きな精神的拠り所であ るということを忘れてはならない。 マーリーらは決して闘いを先導し たわけでも、対立を言い立てたのでもない。 ただ精神の帰るべきとこ ろと、現実世界での救いを訴えたのである。

そして皮肉なことに、そうした社会的な変動が一番激しくジャマイ カに吹き荒れていた時代だからこそマーリーらは、その音楽を究極に まで高めることになったのかもしれない。 もう、 あれから10数年が経 ち、レゲエもすっかりそのスタイルを変えてきた。 しかし、この時代 にレゲエが持ったものだけは、 永遠に忘れてはならないと、ぼくは殆 ど宗教のように思い込んでいる。

さて、このフィルムだが、基本的には1978年4月22日キングストン のナショナルスタジアムで行なわれた “ワン・ラヴ・ピース・コン サート”を中心に、地方での野外イベントやジャマイカ各地のレゲエ、 ラスタにまつわる風景を混ぜ込んで作られたものである。 単に音楽的 な記録を残したものとも違うし、かといってアカデミックにレゲエを 説き明かすようなものでもない。 欲張って両方の要素をおり込んでい こうとすると、往々にしてこうした試みは失敗することも多いのだが、 あまり手を広げなかったせいか、適度にそれぞれの要素が融合して さまざまな楽しみができるものになっている。

映像はインナー・サークルのヴォーカリストであり、いまは亡きジ ェイコブ・ミラーのステージから始まる。 幾度か、 さまざまなシーン で激しいライヴを見せる彼は、 映画 「ハーダー・ゼイ・カム」にも出 てたりしたし、70年代のシーンを語る上では欠かすことのできない人 であり、こうした姿を見ているといかにもゲットーの仲間たちの代表 といった雰囲気がよくわかる。

彼と並んでラスタのメッセージを強烈にアピールして、自身の歌に もあるように存在そのものが危険なナイフの状態なウィンストン・ハ バート・マッキントッシュことピーター・トッシュだ。 彼もまたすで に鬼籍に入ってしまったが、もちろんマーリー バニー・ウェイラー と一緒にコーラス・グループとしてスタートしたウェイラーズのオリ ジナル・メンバーである。

ウェイラーズ時代は、「400イヤーズ」 (奴隷支配の歴史を歌ったもの) や「ゲット・アップ・スタンド・アップ」 などの激しい闘いの姿勢を 示したナンバーを作ったことで知られ、後年はローリングストーン ズのレーベルと契約するなどロック・マーケットでの活躍が目立つよ うになるが、この頃はまだまだドロリとしたジャマイカの熱を伝える 濃〜い歌が聞ける。

場所は不明だが、郊外の昼間のステージには、若いデニス・ブラウ ンの珍しい姿が残されているのも嬉しい。 ここにはジュニア・タッカ 一、 アルシア&ドンナといった当時のチャイルド・スター的なものが見 れ、芸能としてジャマイカン・ミュージックの世界がのぞけたりもす る。またアイスリーとしてウェイラーズには欠かせない素晴らしい コーラスを提供していたジュディ・モワットのソロのステージや初め てDレコードを作ったと言われるU・ロイのステージなども珍しいもの ではある。

しかし、何と言っても我々の興味の中心はやはり5曲収録されてい るマーリーの歌だ。 このときももちろんジャマイカの政情不安は続い ていた。 選挙となると機関銃を持ち出しての射ち合いが世界中にニュ ースとして流される時代だ。 詳しく当時の政治状況を書いてるスペー スはないがマイケル・マンリーを代表とするPNPと、 野党を代表するエ ドワード・シーガが率いるJLPとの二大政党の対立が焦点であった。 マーリー自身、その1年半ほど前にマンリーから請われて スマイ ル・ジャマイカ”をテーマとしたフリー・コンサートへの出演を3日前 にした1976年12月3日に狙撃されたのは、対立する側からのものと見 られたのも当然であった。 それぞれの派が選挙を有利に展開するため にマーリーの人気を利用しようとした結果だったのである。 そうした 暴力はマーリーをジャマイカから殆ど亡命のような状態に追いやった わけだから、よけいこのときのコンサートは大きな意味を持っていた。 歌ったのは、アイランドからのサード・アルバムのタイトル・ソン グ「ナッティ・ドレッド」、 昔からのレパートリーで自分たちの出てき たゲットーの姿を明らかにする「トレンチタウン・ロック」、 76年の「ラ スタマン・ヴァイブレイション」から 「ウォー」、翌年の「エクソダス」 からの「ジャミング」、 そして最後のタイトルバックに流れる ジャ ・リヴ」はラスタにとっての現人神であったエチオピア皇帝ハイレ・ セラシェが死んだ直後に書かれたナンバー。

このときのマーリーは、明らかに異常なほど興奮状態にあることは、 映像を見ているとヒシヒシと伝わってくる。 自分の歌の多くは放送禁 止となる、 おまけに愛する祖国を支配する層と自分が信ずる宗教家た ちとの対立は激しくなるばかりで、さらに平和と友愛をあれほど熱烈 に歌った彼への報酬は銃弾だった。 だからこそ胸をかきむしるように 歌い、 マンリーとシーガの手を結びつけることによって、祖国や仲間 たちの未来に光明を与えようとしたくなった彼の気持ちをとても強く、 特別なものと感じてしまうのだ。

明らかにこの出来事は、 対ジャマイカという意味でマーリーにとっ て最大の意味を持つものとなった。 単純に、それが記録として映像が 残されていて良かったと思う。そして、それはこれからもぼくにとっ て音楽を聞き続けること、そこに寄り添うことの意味と決意を訴えて くるのでもある。 そう、いまでもマーリーは、ぼくにとっては伝説な んかじゃなく、とてもリアルな現実なのだ。

1992年秋、かつての60年代の反戦、 反抗のシンボル、ボブ・ディラ ンのデビューを祝うイベントで、いまや自らの足元や汚れた手に目を つぶること無神経になった連中は、 カトリシズムの鎖につながれた魂 を批判したシンニード・オコナーを狭量な心で袋叩きにした。その醜 悪な連中に彼女からぶつけられたのはマーリーの「ウォー」 だった。 彼女の叫びは、いまでも耳に焼き付くし、きっとマーリーもその歌を 彼女の耳元で聞いていたはずだ。 こうした現実があり続けるかぎり、 ぼくにもシンニードにも、そして心ある多くの人々にとってマーリー の音楽は生き続けていくのである。
